>> in the news this sunday morning, february 26ing, gas prices continue to soar with the average price on the rise once again. and the red carpet is out in hollywood as final preparations are underway before the stars arrive for tonight's oscar. >> good morning w the clear sky, it's a cold start with the numbers in the 30s in our valleys. a chilly afternoon today and rain on the way tonight >> thank you, lisa. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. you are waking up to more sticker shock at the pump. the average price for regular gas statewide went up again overnight. according to triple-a this morning the statewide average is $4.27 a gallon.

yesterday is shot up a nickel to $4.25. a week ago it was just $4.02. just? well -- abc7 sergio reports the pain at the pump it forcing people to find cheaper ways to get around. >> with prices in the four dollars range and beyond, a fill-up is a growing investment. >> $125. a lot of money. >> in the last couple of weeks, a trip to the gas station has become a head-shaking experience, pushing some to consider leaving their vehicles at home. >> i can take my bicycle, i take my bicycle. >> at mike's bikes in san francisco they are getting more people who are looking for alternatives to the pump. >> talking about the fact gas prices are four dollars a gallon. just getting around the city you are burning fuel and you can get through the city so much quicker on a bike. >> she said they are selling better now than in the last couple years in part because san francisco is becoming more and more bicycle friendly and the weather, and because gas prices are a glaring rain.

reason. >> i can't imagine people are spend $100 to fill up their vehicle. that's ridiculous. dan goes for another fuel alternative. dan fills up with less than 3 gallons twice a month. but for those looking for something even more fuel efficient on two wheels, the buddy is a popular option. >> this last month we set record sales, we sold 40 units which, generally speaking, february is our slowest month of the year. >> rated at 110 miles per gallon and 90 miles per gallon, his scooters sip gas. he said he hasn't seen such a rush to snap them up since 2008 when gas prices approached five bucks. >> and at the rates we've been seeing gas rise the last few weeks, we could actually surpass that rate within about a month. >> in san francisco, abc7 noose. -- news. >> expensive gas is fueling debate over u.s. energy policy. republican presidential candidate newt gingrich brought it up at this weekend's state republican convention in burlingame.

michael reagan, a son of the former president, and herman cain, who dropped out of the race last year. >> stupid people are running america and every time you hear about president obama's job approval rating being at least 45%, that's where the stupid people are. >> mr. speaker, can we talk to you for a second? gingrich's campaign staff worked hard to block reporters from asking their candidate any questions, and gingrich himself avoided any dealings with the media. >> why won't you take any questions, mr. speaker? >> republican voter billy gutman of san rafael said she was impressed with gingrich. >> i would vote for them. i will vote for whatever the republican nominee is but i would vote for newt. >> he finished last in a field poll this week. his campaign has been kept alive by money from a super pack money. the primary won't take place

until super tuesday the republican field could be narrowed significantly. gingrich and the state party are hoping gingrich will st. louis be a player then n burlingame, abc7 news. the battle for the republican presidential nomination is playing out in michigan, leading up to tuesday's primaries. mitt romney is trying to fend off a challenge in michigan from surging conservative rick santorum. raised in michigan with his father served as governor but with two days to go, romney and santorum look like they are in a like they are in a dead heat. this is not time for lifelong polls to explain why they voted for this or that based on what they were asked do by their fellow colleagues. >> i'm not going to let the elite come up with phony ideologies and phony ideas to rob you of your freedom and impose government control of your life.

after what about texas congressman ron paul? he is hardly a factor in michigan. he's been visiting college campuses and airing tv attack ads targeting santorum. this morning convicted speed freak killer, wesley, said he's sorry, not because he killed somebody. he told the reporter from the stockton record, he's sorrier kept the location of two bodies a secret from their families so long. as you know, shermantine directed a bounty hunter to the lock. a well near the town of lin done near stockton. 1,000 human bone fragments were found in the well. the search continues for a second location. in south san francisco police have two men in custody this morning after a shooting that led to a standoff. the standoff happened on second lane about 1:00 yesterday afternoon. police had one of the suspects hold up in his apartment, but he

surrendered after several hours. his apartment was right above this neighbor. >> me and my niece are going something is going on upstairs. i said we have to hide because what if the shooting starts. everybody had guns outside. my god, they are going to start shooting, something is going to happen so we started hiding in the bathroom. >> the second suspect was arrested a few blocks away. that incident began when the suspects went to a former workplace. police say shots were fired, and a baseball bat was used on one man who suffered minor injuries. coming up, caught up in linsanity. why ben & jerry's is now apologizing for one of the ingredients in a special addition of frozen yogurt. >> the 84th academy awards are coming soon. an oscar preview is coming up. ♪

>> the 84th academy awards are just hours a way. crews are putting on the final touches before the stars arrive. the avenue was closed down at midnight and the red carpet was extended into the street. a protective cover on the statues was removed -- or rather on the red carpet was removed. workers cleaned and polished the plastic set. and a security sweep will take place this morning using bomb-sniffing dogs just to make sure everything is safe when the stars make their way inside by 5:00. abc has a preview of tonight's show. >> even after a week's work, crews are still busy getting everything just right for

showtime. those in charge have been unusually tight-lipped about tonight's show saying only it should provide plenty of laughs. >> it's been reflected in our host, it's been reflected in our bookings. >> veteran host billy crystal will m.c. for a ninth time. while only bob hope has hosted more shows, crystal said it never gets old. >> 84 years later it's the grand daddy of the shows. i'm thrilled to be able to be out there again. >> "the descendents" is one of two frontrunners for best picture, according to critics. the other is "the artist." it's black and white, mostly silent, and a favorite on the award circuit. >> i think ultimately "the artist" is going to sweep the major categories. there is such support for it. >> what is not so clear is the best actress race, with iron lady meryl streep and "the help" viola davis leading the pack. despite davis' strong

academy. but do you remember a movie they were together perhaps? but anyway, yeah, so that's interesting. >> yeah. >> you can go to our website. we have all kinds of little factoids. >> good morning, everyone. we are looking at a cold, cold start and a return to winter. 36 degrees at the tahoe valley airport right now. heavenly may see a few snow showers tomorrow, but perhaps a half foot or so as we get into the middle of the week where bay area will see a good dose of rain, at least from what we are used to. here's a look from the camera. it is nice and clear out there. the wind has stopped and so conditions are quite frigid in the north bay, with 29 in santa rosa. 34 in napa and fairfield, with 35 in concord. 39 in livermore. we've got upper 30s along the coast. 43 oakland, san francisco.

so it is definitely a much colder start out there, as much as 12 to 16 degrees coolerred to compared to yesterday a lot of wind yesterday in the north bay. 11 degrees colder in concord, as well as hayward, about 12 degrees colder. and on the coast 8 degrees colder. so you are definitely feeling it this morning and we will look for some of that frost to be forming in spots. partly cloudy skies this afternoon with high temperatures not making it out of the 50s today. tomorrow we aren't going to see much change either, although tonight, with the weak weather system passing by to the south of us, the winds are going to pick up tomorrow. so with the 50s and northwesterly winds ahead for your monday, it's going to be a raw day. and then more changes ahead with perhaps more rain coming our way by the middle of the week. so right now we are in between systems. yesterday's system passed by and a chilly air mass. this next one, an area of low pressure in the the pacific northwest will slide down the

coast, and most of the energy along the shoreline, the santa cruz mountains, the central coast into southern california. starting out with a clear sky, the light winds, and then this area of low pressure slides south. the snow levels are going to drop significantly. so perhaps the higher elevations in the south bay will be looking at some wet weather in the form of a rain-snow mix. so 3:00 overnight tonight, look at all the pink on the screen. we have mount hamilton, the santa cruz mountain, big sur mountains, and further south you will notice by the morning hours this continues to slide south. 3:00 we have the san joaquin valley getting wet, as well as a few snow showers around the sierra nevada, the southern sierra, and then as we fast forward this throughout the next couple of days, we are quiet. but look what happens by midnight wednesday morning? we're talking about early wednesday morning. i should say midnight tuesday. we've got the showers headed our way, and in fact looks like a

rainy day for midweek. back home we are talking about a chilly day today. we had all that wind. but today more like 50s at our coast. and back home we will see plenty of mid-50s around the bay. a little breezy san francisco. it's cooler today. 54 there. 57 in fremont and san jose with only 54 in monterey. so the accuweather seven-day forecast, cooler today. still dropping a few degrees tomorrow. maybe some higher elevation snow overnight. partly cloudy tuesday. here comes make a half-inch to inch of rain on wednesday. a little warmer with a slightly warmer air mass. but we will dry out and once again, sunny and warmer next weekend. >> it looks like wednesday could actually be something? >> finally, you will need your umbrella. >> thanks, lisa. coming up at 7:00 right after the newscast is good morning america. dan harris is joining us live now from new york to tell us what is on tap. good morning, dan. >> hey, carolyn, good morning to you. thanks for having me on. we are at a potential tipping

point in america's decade-long war in afghanistan. a big morning there. there's a manhunt on right now for whoever killed two american servicemen inside of a supposedly save government building in kabul, the capital of afghanistan. if americans can't be safe here, where can they be safe? we will get into that. take a look at this surveillance video. it's another kennedy family controversy. you are looking at a kennedy son when they the nurses are trying to stop him from carrying a baby out of a maternity ward. we have details about a search for a missing firefighter who vanished 1600 miles away from his home in florida. firefighters are now springing into action to help search for their missing colleague. evanished after driving to maine to see a friend. what do they think happened to him? we will talk to them coming up. and we are just hours away from the oscars. the stars are going to be on the

red carpet, presenters handing out the coveted hardware on stage, and this morning we will explore some last minute looming questions and we will tell you who won the indy spirit awards, they call it the irreverent half brothers of the oscars. we have chris conley doing some reporting this morning. and my question for you, your prediction, best dressed on the red carpet tonight? >> best dressed on the red carpet? >> did i stump you? >> does it have to be someone nominated or just someone who is going to be there? >> whoever you like. >> i would say angelina jolie, who will accompany bradd pitt, who is up for best actor for "money ball." >> a great movie, by the way. i thought that movie was one of the best of the year. >> well, i like it, too. the ins and outs of baseball and it has to do with the oakland a's, so sure. >> exactly. exactly. >> and so what's your prediction of best male dressed? not actor, just dressed. >> i'll just go with it's either got to be coon any or pitt,

gearing up for cactus league action at their spring training in arizona. we have that and more with this morning's sports. >> good morning. to steal a kevin bacon line from "a few good men," these are the facts of the case and they are undisputed. in 2011 the giants finished last in the national league in runs, rbi, on-base percentage and hitting with runners in scoring position. can things improve with the new-look outfield? mike shumann reports from scottsdale. angel pagen is the complete package. he may be the missing piece of the puzzle for the giants' offense, badding lead off in the least producing run team in america last season. >> i like to be a tablesetter. i like to get on base, put pressure on the bases. that way my team will have a chance to bring somebody in. we have a tremendous pitching staff and the only way we can win is to have run support on the board and that's what i'm here for. >> he has the speed and range to cover center field at&t park. >> my philosophy is to play good

>> welcome back, everyone. afghanistan's president went on television today to renew his calls for calm after five days of deadly protests over the burning of qurans at a u.s. military base. late yesterday nato and the british government recalled their advisers from afghan ministries after two u.s. military advisors were found shot to death execution style. abc7 tomas reports 30 people have been killed since the incident came to light on tuesday.

>> there doesn't seem to be a safe zone left for u.s. military troops in afghanistan. a person believed to be an afghan walked into the ministry controlled by the police and opened the door with a key pad combination. a major and ltd. colonel who had taken off their body armor were shot in the head by the intruder. 200 military advisers were immediately removed from the country's ministries. afghans have been furious over the accidental burning of qurans monday. >> if they asked you to attack americans, would you attack me, would you attack other americans on the streets of kabul? >> we don't care about you, but if you were a soldier we would tear your skin off. >> the commanders attempted to calm it with numerous apologies. >> we are deeply concerned about the possibility that qurans or religious materials were damaged in this incident and we will get to the bottom of what actually happened. isf has complete respect for

islam and the reverence for which the quran is held. >> we admit our mistake, ask for forgiveness and seek to move on. >> that may be difficult for afghan muslims to do. burning the quran is a harsh and ugly act that will distress people around the world, not only the people in the cities and villages of afghanistan. all muslims feel today they and the holy book has been attacked by these foolish people. >> abc news. warren buffett admitted he was dead wrong about the recovery of the american housing market. in his annual letter to berkshire hathaway investors he said he thought it would have recovered by now, but eventually he says the housing market has to come back because of human nature. he said while doubling up may be the initial reaction of some during the recession, living with the in-laws can quickly lose it's alures. berkshire generated more than $10 billion in net income last

year. we are gearing up for the oscars here on abc7. coverage kicks off today at 1:30 and the big show starts at 5:00 p.m. "seven lives" lizzy is in loves -- los angeles for ail the red carpet buzz and she shows us the excitement that's building. >> now less than 24 hours, still hollywood's biggest night, i'm here on the red carpet where they are putting on the finishing touches. earlier i talked to two oscar nominees, and fortunately -- unfortunately one didn't have much to say. >> did you have any idea you would actually get an oscar nomination for a role you had no speaking. >> i had no idea. >> what was your reaction? >> wonderful. it is a wonderful thing because it's very moving because it is your actual colleagues who decide about it. >> i'm standing by with oscar nominee melissa mccarthy as

>> hi, lisa. >> here's a look at the clear, cold sky. heavenly we are looking at the possibility of 134 snow showers headed there. a couple opportunities tomorrow, and then again midweek. and mount tam this morning, remember yesterday we had all the wind blowing, but isn't this beautiful. sunrise, 6:46. we will be looking at another fairly sunny day today although we will call it partly cloudy. the opportunity for rain later

today as the storm system slides down the coast. 38 at half moon bay, 29 in santa rosa. the dewpoints are low. we've got some frost up in the north bay. the east bay is pretty cold as well with 35 in concord, 39 livermore, as well as mountain view, and napa coming in at 34 degrees. it was 28 at 4:00 this morning. we are getting a little bit of win, but the cold air drains into the valleys. and this morning in the low 40s, san francisco and oakland. that north wind backed off and today we will be more into a westerly wind. it will still be cool but we will look for another weather system to bring even colder air for the next couple days. 8 degrees colder this morning at half moon bay. redwood city, 9 degrees colder. finally feeling like february for the next 72 hours or so. in fact, we are look to look at not only cold weather, gusty winds, the possibility of rain-snow mix and more significant rain midweek. clear and cold to start with

partly cloudy skies today. our first chance of rain comes in tonight overnight. here's a look at the satellite and radar composite. we have what looks like a break right now. another system is cueing up to the north and west of us. yesterday with the passage of the first system we have a coop parcel of air overhead and that's allowing for the cold start. the winds backing off and yet another system, a colder system, headed our way. this will come in later on tonight, dropping the snow levels and with what little moisture it has, at about 2,000 to 3,000 feet it will drop some precipitation in the form of perhaps some wet snow. here we are at 3:00 in the morning, tomorrow morning, and look at the pink here on the map. the higher elevations we are looking at some snow here. the question is how much of it are we going to see? it could be sloppy and quite slick on the roadways. highway 17, be careful. santa cruz mountains, big sur we are looking at the possibility of that snow coming down.

but elsewhere around the bay, not a lot of precip expected. in fact partly cloudy skies monday afternoon, tuesday afternoon. but by midnight tuesday we are looking at our next system coming in, anywhere from a third to a half-inch, maybe more than that on wednesday. 48 in yosemite today. a very cold start with only 50s on the coast. a breeze there and numbers as much as 5 degrees colder today than yesterday's readings. 57 in napa, and 54 richmond, san francisco. we will look at numbers only in the upper 50s at morgan hill and 54 at monterey. the accuweather seven-day forecast in fact brings us down a few more degrees tomorrow with a cooler, cloudier and somewhat wet air mass perhaps with maybe some light snow. highest elevations and then rain coming in late tuesday into wednesday. and it looks like we will slowly warm up and dry out after that. so what little snow, rain we get, we are hoping for it. >> yeah. but these temperatures look a

exposition. it's the sound of an almost mythical pipe organ 40 feet tall and 40 feet wide that played concerts for thousands of people there everyday, and an organ you probably never heard of. >> they have an idea what this instrument can to or is. >> and so the formation of friends of the exposition organ. dick has collected the sights, sounds and memories of that instrument in the hope of hearing it live some day, though that will take some doing. the exposition organ does exhibit between the grass of san francisco's civic center plaza. you will find it downstairs behind locked doors in the old brooks hall, a room nailed with the unused, unread, unresearched and tucked away in the deepest corner. the unheard. >> the tallest pipe is 37 feet long and weighs 700 pounds. >> it is one large pipe among 10,000 of them, 40 tons of organ strewn around the floor.

a piece of local music history unclaimed by any city department, cloaked in dust and darkness. >> the last time this organ played in public in san francisco, it was 1989, just before the earthquake. the instrument's life in limbo began as san francisco burned. inside the civic auditorium, which had become the organ's home after the exhibition, a wall collapsed. >> pretty much covering all of the exposed pipes with about a foot of blaster and debris. >> restoration work in hartford, connecticut took years. by the time it returned, civic auditorium had a new tenant. so san francisco stored the organ in brooks hall where it's remained for 18 years, boxed up, ready to reassemble and play, homeless and forgotten now by all but a few. ♪ it might seem strange to hear

such passion for pipe organs, but you would understand better if you sat in a room vibrating with the sound of one. >> pipe organs have this bad rap of being about funerals, weddings, churches, churchness, and dracula. >> actually pipe organ music remains alive and well in the hands and feet of younger players like tina, who is equally comfortable playing bach, a fugue or a telephone of lady gaga. >> it is open more to acoustic music than people think they are. we just want to hear something real and authentic. >> the question is where? >> we are talking back here it would be great. >> maybe it is a pipe dream but friends of the organ would like to see the organ back in the palace of fine arts, a space now occupied with the exploritorium that will move after a retrofit. imagine the sound. >> what's the attraction of an organ like this in a place like this?
